Is cotton better for the environment than other textiles or plastic?

Generally speaking, yes. Cotton is energy self-sustaining, and does not contribute to net greenhouse gas emissions. This is because cotton naturally uses sunlight to convert itself into a soft fiber without any intermediate processing steps (unlike plastic or bamboo). So, cotton basically has a “negative” energy footprint. You can learn more about that here.
